The Pato, one of Captain Slocum's least-known commands, ws a small, fast schooner built to the lines of the fameous yacht Sappho, and owned by Slocum briefly in the 1870's. In it, with his family, Slocum made one of his most interesting voyages, from Hong Kong to Portland, Oregon, via the Bearing Sea, and thence to Honoluu. While in Portland, Slocum sold at fancy prices a load of salt cod taken aboard in the Bearing. (Slocum family records and The Oregonian, Portland; original art by E. Bruce Dauner)
